I firmly believe it is important to set high goals and constantly update one's own five or 10 year plan. I have a lot of dreams and don't want to compromise any of them, so my plan is extended and incorporates probably enough dreams to last a couple of lifetimes. Though I change my mind often, this is what my plan looks like this month:
Near Future
After graduation, I would like to begin my career in a corporate communications position either where I am now, with MidAmerican, or somewhere similar to get a few years experience under my belt. I have high hopes that after two or three years I will return to school to get my Master's by taking advantage of my employers education assistance program.
Within 10 years
After I have spent at least 10 year in corporate communications, I want to get into some kind of journalistic or special interest writing - it may be a pay cut, but there is so much more flexibility in the writing content and style. After living in the corporate world, it will be a long awaited chance to write what I want.
When I have had enough of that, I want to teach college. Ideally, I would like to teach part-time to allow time to begin writing my first book. Though writing a book is high on my priority list, I think it will come out better once I've had time to experience a good portion of life.
Retirement
I have always wanted to own a coffee shop. I plan to end my working days by opening an internet cafe, where I can sit around drinking coffee all day and enjoying life. If something is missing and I need more to occupy my time, I'll work from my shop doing contracted writing and editing or something fun like that.
