Currently I am a senior at Iowa State majoring in English with an emphasis in technical communications. I am also working towards a double minor in public relations and visual communications.
I am expecting to graduate right on time in Spring of 2008. I can’t wait to have a big-kid job!
I have been at ISU since the spring of ‘05. Prior to that I had taken courses at Scott Community College in Bettendorf, Iowa. After a semester there, I realized I hated it so I took a semester off before realizing that a change of scenery was all I needed which is when I transferred to ISU.
My high school was lame. I lived in a town called Rock Island, the school was Rock Island High School, nicknamed Rocky, and guess what our mascot was…yup Go Rocks! We even had a giant boulder out front of the school to show team spirit.
Working to learn
When I talk about my major and minors, most people ask what kind of a job that will lead to--to which I have always responded, "You know, I don't really know what I want to do just yet."
In May, I landed a fabulous internship with MidAmerican Energy Company. The position totally encompases everything I am studying and I finally have the compass pointing in the right direction.
In short, I write for a weekly and a quartly publication. The weekly is distributed in Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska and South Dakota. For the quartly I work with people in all of our company's platforms and it is distributed across the entire U.S., in parts of the U.K. and across the Philippines.
In addition to writing, I do mass amounts of editing, and a little bit of event planning, web auditing, preparing media kits and updating and editing news releases.
I truly couldn't have asked for a better opportunity when it comes to preparing for graduation. At work, I am treated just like every other employee and don't get the mundane tasks of stapling papers and making copies like so many of my classmates.
